The first MECCA café opened
in Davis Cres, Newmarket, Auckland, in September 1995, with down to earth décor
and selling Mediterranean deli items, carpets, rugs, and coffee.
It had a strong Turkish feel, was simple, and soon became a popular
place to frequent for the Newmarket professionals. Customers demanded
more of an eaterie establishment, and MECCA Newmarket developed into
a café. At that time there were no other cafes of its type.
Many times MECCA Newmarket was voted Auckland café of the
year for its food, service and coffee in 1996, 1997, and 1998. A
successful formula had been developed, and from there was the vision
to open more MECCA cafes throughout Auckland.
MECCA cafes are in five popular locations throughout Auckland – Chancery, Esplanade (Devonport), Newmarket, Stonehouse
(Mission
Bay), and the Viaduct Basin.
MECCA cuisine is modern café, with a strong Mediterranean influence. Menus
change slightly with the seasons, but favourites are maintained throughout the
year.
